Railroads were an important means of transportation for farm products (e.g. milk and strawberries), products of the mills on the local streams (e.g. cotton yarn and cloth), and of people. It was this latter fact that so transformed the towns along the rail line as it made it possible to commute to the center of commerce in New York City. The train line ended at the Hudson where a ferry completed the journey to Manhattan. Lucas, W. A.. From the hills to the Hudson. 1944. |
