Who are the students?
Adults (over 18 years) of any nationality, who are current residents of Ridgewood and plan to remain in our community for at least one full year. The Library always has a waiting list of students. We Try to find earliest placement for those with the greatest need of assistance. Classroom instruction is open to residents of other towns, if there is space available.
Who are the tutors?

Adult volunteer tutors work with individual students or in small groups. All tutors must become certified through our four session Ridgewood Library Tutor Training Program. Earlier ESL or LVA experience may be considered in the certification process. Teaching experience, foreign language skills and Ridgewood residency are not required for tutors.

When and where does tutoring take place?

Students and tutors generally meet once a week for 1.5 to 2 hours throughout the school year. These groups meet in the Library's Literacy Study or in other quiet library areas.

Classroom Instructors lead groups of 15-20 students, meeting twice a week over a 4-7 week period.

What kinds of programs are offered?

One-to-one tutoring is available to beginning students with no prior English experience, or who know only the most basic English grammar and vocabulary.  Students will receive direct instruction in vocabulary and grammar.  Tutoring meets once a week. Small Group instruction is available to students who have some proficiency in English, and who can hold a brief conversation using basic English vocabulary and grammar.  The group maximum is five students.  Small Groups combine the direct instruction of a one-to-one tutoring situation with the conversation opportunities of a group, and offer students the opportunity to progress in their English skills within a small class which meets once a week. Conversation Groups are available to students who can hold a longer conversation, using a wider variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures.  The group maximum is ten students.  The group leader will introduce various topics of interest for group discussion.  Also included may be problem-solving skills and strategies or mini-lessons on relevant vocabulary or grammar difficulties.  Conversation groups offer students the opportunity to get to know other people in the community within the context of English instruction.  Conversation groups meet once a week.

Classroom Instruction is offered several times a year.  This class meets twice a week, for one and one-half hours, and lasts for a session of six weeks, and is open to a maximum of twenty students.  Classroom Instruction is open to students from other towns, space providing.  Class structure includes reading, writing, and discussion on the class readings.  Students can expect lessons in vocabulary, grammatical structures, and reading strategies.
