Our Mission

To develop a basis of perpetual financial support to ensure that our Library will always provide outstanding information, education and culture in a user-friendly, state-of-the-art facility.

The Ridgewood Library Foundation is a non-profit 501c3 corporation led by an independent board of directors. The Foundation's goal is to support long-term growth of the Ridgewood Public Library and help meet needs in the areas of collections, technology, and large-scale facility and service enhancements.

The Foundation and its Board operate independently from the Village of Ridgewood municipal services. The Foundation exists solely to enhance and expand services provided by the Library. Financial support from the Village of Ridgewood, the State of New Jersey, and other sources will continue and not be diminished by the existence of gifts generated by the Foundation.

The Foundation gratefully accepts all donations to help fill the gap between municipal tax dollars and the actual costs of providing first class public library services in Ridgewood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ridgewood Public Library Foundation?

The Ridgewood Public Library Foundation is an independent fund-raising arm of the Ridgewood Public Library. The Foundation seeks private sector support for selected capital improvements, services and programs that provide greater access to learning for the Village's population. The Foundation provides funding for library services, which complements, but does not supplant the Village's responsibility for operating the library. The Foundation is a non-profit 501c3 corporation.

How is the Foundation different from Friends of the Library?

The Friends By-laws require the annual dispersement of all funds raised. Friends purchase books and other library materials, pay for all library programs and finance the Library Townwide Newsletter. Friends enable the library to provide crucial materials and programs needed today.

The Foundation is dedicated primarily to continuing the viability of the library for the future. Growth of the Foundation's endowment will provide interest and dividend income for years to come. Future projects funded by the Endowment may include an expanded Teen and Young Adult Center, small meeting rooms, and a larger and more comfortable seating area for reading magazines and newspapers.

Friends sustain the present excellence. The Foundation ensures the library's brilliant future.

Why Should I make a donation to a tax-supported institution?

The Village of Ridgewood provides generous funding for basic operating expenses which include staffing costs and maintenance of facility and existing collections. The major 1998 Library expansion brought growth of circulation by 65%, computer use by 229%, and program attendance by 109%, as well as ongoing new facility needs. Rising costs related to growth in services have outpaced traditional tax-based library funding. Private financial support will enable the Ridgewood Public Library to provide the elements of excellence, now and in the future.

As the Ridgewood Library continues to expand educational services within our community, the Library Foundation partners with private citizens and businesses to secure funds to support programs and resources outside the municipal budget. These initiatives include the acquisition of special in-dpth collections, new technologies to provide the public with free and equal access to the latest electronic information resources, and facility enhancements.

Will my privacy be protected?

The Ridgewood Public Library Foundation is committed to safeguarding your information. Any information you provide to us will be used by the Foundation solely in connection with its work. The Foundation does not rent, share, trade, or sell your personal information to any outside individuals, companies, or organizations. If you give us permission to contact you by email, your name and contact information will be used only to send your relevant information.

Does the Library have an endowment?

The Foundation is currently raising $1 millon to establish an endowment providing long term support for library programs and services.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

The IRS has determined that your contribution, bequest or securities transfer is exempt from the Federal Income tax under Section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

What kinds of gifts does the Library Foundation accept?

The Foundation welcomes gifts of cash, securities, real estate, life insurance, and more. In general, the Library Foundation seeks gifts of cash, or financial instruments or items of value (including homes and automobiles) which may be sold and converted to cash, in order to enrich our Library Endowment or to fulfill current Library needs.

The Foundation itself does not accept book donations; the Library may accept donations of current books (published within one year), CDs and DVDs in excellent condition. Please call the Library Circulation Desk for more information (201) 670-5600, ext. 101.
